MANILA, Philippines-- A Philippine governor says at least 33 villagers and soldiers have drowned when torrents of water dumped by a powerful typhoon rushed down a mountain, engulfing the sufferers and bringing the death toll from the storm to about 40.
Gov. Arturo Uy says rainfall from Typhoon Bopha accumulated atop a mountain and then rupture down on Andap village in New Bataan town in Compostela Valley early Tuesday. Uy says the sufferers consisted of villagers who had actually run away from their homes to a town hall, which was overloaded by the flash flood. An army truck carrying soldiers and villagers also was washed away. The catastrophe brought the typhoon death toll to about 40.
